Lilo’s Journey to Family: Lone Star CASA Shares Inspiring Adoption Story

Kaufman & Rockwall, TX —

For Immediate Release

September 16, 2025 — Lone Star CASA had the joy of celebrating the adoption of 17-year-old Lilo at the Grayson County Courthouse. Lilos’s journey through foster care is one of extraordinary resilience, healing, and hope. Lilo’s path was not without setbacks, including the heartbreak of a failed adoption. Yet, with consistent guidance and encouragement, she discovered that family can be safe, supportive, and lasting.

After surviving trauma in her early life, Lilo entered foster care at just four years old. She re-entered care in spring of 2021, after she suffered abuse by her adoptive family. Lilo was then placed in more than 24 foster homes. Despite her circumstances and challenges with her mental health, Lilo found moments of courage and growth. For the past four years, she has been searching for stability, a sense of belonging, and what every child needs to thrive, consistency.

At first, Lilo was understandably withdrawn and guarded, unsure if she could ever trust again, but with the support of her dedicated CASA Volunteer, Irene, she slowly began to heal and believe in herself and in the possibility of a brighter future. Irene was a steady and reliable presence throughout her journey, ensuring Lilo’s voice was heard and celebrating every small step forward. She made sure Lilo had access to the support and encouragement she needed to rebuild her confidence and begin to dream again.

“This has been an amazing journey with Lilo through all the changes and discoveries these last four years. She has grown into a wonderful and caring young lady. I am thrilled that she has been adopted by the Smith family. They are such a wonderful family that will support and assist her throughout her adult life. Her journey is such a success story,” said Irene.

On September 16, just weeks before her 18th birthday, Lilo took her biggest and bravest step yet—being adopted into a permanent, loving home. The Smith family opened their hearts and lives to her, and Lilo, in turn, chose to trust and open her heart to them. Her adoption is a powerful reminder of what can happen when a child has someone in their corner. The incredible impact of CASA Volunteers, who stand beside children in foster care to ensure their voices are heard, their needs are met, and their future is full of possibilities.

“This adoption represents more than a change of name or legal status,” added Tahj Walker, Youth Empowerment Specialist at Lone Star CASA. “It represents healing, hope, and the chance for Lilo to grow into adulthood knowing she is loved and supported.”

For Lone Star CASA, Lilo’s story is a reminder that every child deserves safety, belonging, and the opportunity to thrive. It’s never too late to make a difference. Become a CASA Volunteer today and help a child like Lilo find hope and a brighter future.
